NWJAD and ASL Access Proudly Announce

the CLIFFORD R. ROWLEY
American Sign Language Video Collection

On January 15, 2000 at the General Meeting of the Northwest Jersey Association of the Deaf, Inc. (NWJAD), a surprise announcement was made. Our new ASL Access Video Collection was named in honor of Cliff Rowley!

ASL Access is a non-profit organization whose goal is to set up ASL videotape collections in public libraries across the country. Two libraries currently have these collections; one is in Washington, D.C., and the other in Virginia.

Each ASL Access Video Collection, which includes over 200 videotapes, is given to a public library. The collection is named in honor of a Deaf person who appreciates ASL and who has made a difference in the community.

NWJAD and the Higgs Family Foundation funded the new ASL Access Video Collection, which will be housed in the newly renovated Morris County Library.

The NWJAD board unanimously selected Cliff Rowley due to his strong commitment and support of ASL as well as his many accomplishments on behalf of the Deaf Community. With great honor, NWJAD named this collection:

CLIFFORD R. ROWLEY
American Sign Language Video Collection

The videotapes include ASL translations of children's stories, sign language teaching videos, and original ASL poetry, stories, comedy, and drama. Historical tapes, biographies, informational videos, and translations of classic literature, all signed in ASL, clearly prove that signed languages communicate as powerfully as spoken and written languages.

NWJAD hopes that others will raise funds to put ASL Access Video Collections in their local libraries and select deserving Deaf persons to honor.

For more information about this project, visit the ASL Access website, www.aslaccess.org, or contact ASL Access at 1-703-799-8733 (Voice) or 1-703-799-4896 (TTY) or ASLAccess@aol.com.

For information about when the collection will open to the public, or to reserve ASL videos, visit the Morris County Library website, http://www.gti.net/mocolib1/deaf.html. The Morris County Free Library is located at 30 E. Hanover Ave., in Whippany, NJ.
